Imagine the future. Imagine the year 3062. Using awesome
technologies to travel at astonishing speeds, humankind has
inhabited the far reaches of the known universe. Five major
factions, each controlled politically by 5 powerful families,
reign over thousands of these inhabited worlds. Others
planets located on the edge of known space are a haven for
pirates, individual pioneers, and minor political nations.
This is the setup for the BattleTech storyline. Basically,
these guys (the Clans) want to take over the universe,
believing they are its rightful rulers. Meanwhile, these
other guys (the Inner Sphere) have been trying to take over
the universe for the past hundreds of years, each time
foiled by one another. To see what happens when the two
collide, click the Brief History of the BattleTech Universe
below. It gives a short description of the 'past-to-present'
situation between the Houses of the Star League and the
Warriors of Kerensky.
BattleTech has been around for about 20
years. Since its creation, it has gone through
many changes. Originally starting as a
strategy board game, it became a novel
series that now includes over 70 books. It
has made efforts to gain popular attention
with additional strategy games. It has been
most successful in the video game world, with
computer games such as Mechwarrior and
MechCommander. BattleTech's most popular
new games are the Mechwarrior: Dark Age
game by Wizkid's and Mech Assault on
Microsoft's X Box game system.
