Dr. Byron Jones was initially drawn to the Strider's Strikers by Rocky Potts.
Meeting on Wasat, Byron and Rocky quickly became friends while discussing their
common interests in mechanics.  After Rocky developed the Infighter BattleMech,
he informed Mike Strider and Devon Carns that Byron was a major developer in
the Mech's primary weapon, the ThunderClap-20.  Impressed with the
experimental weapon's performance ratings, Mike and Devon met with Byron to
invite him onto the Strikers' small research team.  Byron accepted the invitation to
join.  He demanded one special request of the two.  Byron wanted to learn Mech
piloting and become a regular Mechwarrior on the Strikers team.  After much
debate, Mike and Devon finally agreed to fulfill the requirement.  Byron had since
regularly met with Duo Maxwell for training.
Byron's skills were slightly higher than average.  Because Duo Maxwell was both
his trainer and lance commander, Byron held a close relationship with the monk.
His skills seemed to be improving over the years.  He had gained some experience
fighting on Miranda against rebel Industrial Mechs and AgroMechs.  Byron's
personally-modified Catapult had twin Thunder LRM racks.  The Mech was
intended to remain potent after ammunition ran low with it's backup array of 4 ER
medium lasers.
Byron was among those afflicted with severe health problems after a Blakist
nuclear device was detonated in 3067.  His company was the target of the attack,
which had caught all present completely off-guard.  Byron suffered from immediate
radiation sickness, vomiting only moments after the actual blast had occurred.  His
Catapult was knocked to the ground, causing him to momentarily black out.  He
withdrew from the area soon thereafter, but the effects were already showing.
Byron was treated for acute radiation sickness.
As a man of science who knew well the consequences of radiation exposure, Byron
took his end particularly bad.  He knew his short term recovery as a 'walking
ghost' would last only a matter of hours, and his intense depression led many to
believe he had never even experienced the short term recovery period.  Byron
spent his final days sketching out new weapons concepts.  He tried to record all of
his ideas that he'd never had time to work on or those that he felt would one day
bear fruit.  After a horrendous 19-day bout with his foe and the loss of most of his
internal organs' functioning, Byron finally surrendered to die.
