When the Strider's Strikers left Wasat, Marik officials were offended that the
team did not take residence in yet another Marik world. Rather than displaying a
constant loyalty to the Free Worlds League, the Strikers packed up and left for
Nova Cat space. Though friendly communications between the two forces
continued, the Free Worlds League were initially concerned that the Strikers might
take a new contract with the Draconis Combine. League officials quickly decided
to monitor the team, which would give them some insight to Clan Nova Cat as well
as future Striker plans. Taking advantage of the Striker's recruitment, the League
placed a S.A.F.E. agent among its ranks. Buford Olman joined the Strikers during
their recent recruitment. With his disguise and a periphery affiliation, he was
immediately ranked as a top candidate for Striker membership.
Buford's loyalties laid with the well-being of House Marik. Though he was quick to
become integrated as a member of the team, Buford was secretly busy collecting
data on the Irece Prefecture for his nation. Though the Draconis Combine and the
Free Worlds League have a commonly peaceful relationship, both nations
constantly monitor one another's actions. The League hoped to eventually steal
schematics for either Clan or Combine BattleMechs, seeking to produce an Inner
Sphere re-engineered OmniMech of their own if parts could be produced or
purchased.
To House Marik's surprise, the Strikers showed dramatic unpredictability by
accepting an agreement to work under House Davion. Though this contract sent
half of the Strikers to Davion/Steiner space, Buford at first remained in Nova Cat
space. He was delayed in contacting his Marik superiors due to the strict security
within the Irece Prefecture. However when he was sent with another group of the
team into the Lyran Commonwealth, he found plenty of opportunities to transmit
secrets and information on the unit's command structure.
With his contact established, Buford found new ways of reaching his superiors. He
was successful in transmitting from within the Irece Prefecture from the year 3064.
Unfortunately this lead to unexpected results when the Word of Blake interfered
with his transmissions and stole his findings. Predictably, the Blakists used the
information to strike once again at Strider's Strikers. This time would be the most
dangerous, as only a skeleton crew remained stationed at the main base. The
Blakists took over Miranda in large numbers. Only after reinforcements had
arrived was the combined might of Acer's Hueys, the Crusaders, and Strider's
Strikers able to stop them.
Buford finally paid a heavy price for his spy duty when he and the rest of his
company were attacked by a nuclear weapon in 3067. A Blakist cell under the
Toyama faction's command used Buford's report to attack the company of Striker
Mechs while they undertook training exercises on a remote moon. With few
reinforcements, the Strikers' group took massive losses. Buford himself died after
a month and a half bout with the radiation effects from the Blakists' Cobalt-60
bomb.
He confessed to his actions shortly before his death. Clan members of the unit
called for an immediate trial followed by an execution, but Buford was afforded the
death that he'd helped cause instead. Most found it a fitting sentence in the end.
